Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which is better for SA businesses?
Google Ads is better when people are already searching for what you sell, because it captures existing demand. Meta Ads, on Facebook and Instagram, is better for creating demand, building awareness and remarketing to people who know you. Most growing South African businesses do not need to choose one forever. They need to start with the platform that matches the customer journey, prove it, then add the second. At Wassp, our current average return on ad spend is 8.35x on Google and 5.52x on Meta, which shows both can work when they are used for the right job.
The simplest way to understand the difference
- Google Ads: a customer has a problem today and searches for a solution. Think plumber near me, divorce attorney Johannesburg, or buy running shoes online.
- Meta Ads: a customer is scrolling, not searching. Your ad has to stop the scroll, create interest and give them a reason to act. Think a new housing development in Ballito, a fashion range, a restaurant special, or a B2B service they did not know existed.
One captures demand. The other creates it. Confusing the two is the most common reason ad budgets disappoint.
Google Ads: strengths, costs and best uses
Best for
- Services people search for in a moment of need
- High intent keywords with a clear location, such as Bedfordview, Johannesburg or Cape Town
- E-commerce products people compare and search for by name
- Lead generation where one enquiry is worth a lot
Costs in South Africa
Most Search clicks cost R5 to R50, with competitive industries paying much more. You pay per click, so a poor landing page directly wastes money.
Watch out for
Expensive clicks in legal, finance, insurance and property. Weak tracking also hurts, because Google optimises toward what you measure. Measure the wrong thing and it will find more of the wrong thing.
Meta Ads: strengths, costs and best uses
Best for
- Building awareness and demand for a product or brand people are not searching for yet
- Visual products: retail, fashion, beauty, food, property, travel and lifestyle
- Remarketing to website visitors, Instagram engagers and your customer list
- Promotions, launches and seasonal campaigns, including Black Friday and payday cycles in South Africa
Costs in South Africa
Meta clicks are usually cheaper than Google Search clicks, often only a few rand per click for broad audiences, but intent is lower. A cheap click that never buys is not cheap at all. Judge Meta on cost per lead or cost per sale, as you should with Google.
Watch out for
Creative is the targeting now. Weak images, weak video and a vague message will fail even with a good audience. Meta also reports its own results generously, so check claimed conversions against your real enquiries and sales.
Side by side for a South African business
- Customer mindset: Google is actively looking. Meta is passively browsing.
- Speed: Both can deliver traffic fast. Google usually delivers enquiries faster for search-driven services. Meta builds a pipeline and an audience.
- Creative needs: Google needs strong ad copy and a strong landing page. Meta needs strong visuals, video and copy, refreshed often.
- Data needs: Both need proper conversion tracking. Without it, you are guessing.
- Best first test: Google for an established service with clear search demand. Meta for a visual, new or impulse-led product, and for remarketing in almost every case.
When should you use both?
Use both when:
- People search for your category, and your competitors are visible on social too
- Your buying cycle is longer than one click, such as property, vehicles, education, solar, B2B services and high value retail
- You have a website getting traffic that does not convert, so remarketing can bring people back
- You want to grow beyond the limits of search volume in your area
A practical starting split for many SMEs is 60 to 70 percent on the platform closest to the sale, usually Google Search, and 30 to 40 percent on Meta for demand and remarketing. Then move money toward the lower cost per customer, not the lower cost per click.
What about TikTok and LinkedIn?
Wassp also runs TikTok and LinkedIn ads. TikTok can work well for younger audiences, retail and video-led products, with a current Wassp average ROAS of 4.31x. LinkedIn costs more per click but can be right for B2B when one client is worth a lot. The rule stays the same: match the channel to the goal and the customer.
Why we check both platforms with Seria Analytics
Google and Meta both mark their own homework. Both can claim credit for the same sale. Seria Analytics is our in-house technology. It checks Google and Meta data, strips out fake or double counted conversions, and gives us a daily brief of what to fix before we shift budget. That is how you avoid moving money to the platform that reports best instead of the platform that performs best.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, Google Ads or Meta Ads?
Meta is usually cheaper per click. Google is often cheaper per ready to buy customer for search-driven services. Compare cost per enquiry and cost per sale, not cost per click.
Which is better for a small local business in South Africa?
If people search for your service, start with Google and add Meta remarketing. If your product is visual or new, start with Meta and add Google as demand grows.
Can I run ads myself on just one platform?
Yes, but set up tracking first, use one clear offer and one clear audience, and give the test enough budget and time. Most wasted spend comes from no tracking and too many small, competing campaigns.
How do I know which platform is really working?
Compare platform reports to your actual leads and sales in your CRM, till or inbox. If the numbers do not line up, get the data checked before you change the budget.
Not sure where your next rand should go?
Send us your website and tell us what a customer is worth. We will recommend a starting platform and a test plan, with the reasons in plain language.
