Why your Google and Meta reports are lying to you about conversions
Google and Meta reports can overstate your results because each platform claims credit for conversions it only helped with, counts low quality actions as conversions, and measures success using its own rules. If you add Google conversions and Meta conversions together, the total is often higher than your real sales. Before you increase budget, cut a campaign or judge your agency, check the platform data against your actual enquiries, sales and revenue. That independent check is exactly what Seria Analytics does at Wassp.
It is not always a deliberate lie. It is a built-in conflict
Google and Meta sell advertising. They also report on how that advertising performed. That means the platform is both the player and the referee.
Each platform wants to prove it deserves more of your budget. So each one uses attribution rules that favour itself, counts conversions generously, and presents the best version of the story in its dashboard. None of that helps you decide where your next rand should go.
Five ways your reports mislead you
1. Double counting the same customer
A person sees your Meta ad on Monday, searches on Google on Wednesday and buys. Meta claims the conversion. Google claims the conversion. Your shop had one sale, but your reports show two conversions. Add the platforms together and growth looks better than it is.
2. View-through conversions that were barely views
Someone scrolls past your ad without clicking, then buys later for a completely different reason. The platform may still claim credit within its attribution window. Some of those sales are real influence. Many are coincidence presented as performance.
3. Fake, duplicate and low-value conversions
A page reload, a double form submit, a bot visit, a test enquiry from your own staff, or a WhatsApp click counted as a lead even though no message was sent. If every small action is set up as a conversion, your reports fill up with success that never reached your bank account, and the algorithms then optimise to find more of it.
4. Mismatched time and place
Platforms report conversions on the date of the click, not always on the date of the sale. Month end can look brilliant or terrible depending on which report you read. South African realities make this worse: payday timing, public holidays and month-end buying patterns move real sales, while platform dashboards smooth them into neat daily lines.
5. Smart bidding optimising toward the wrong target
Google and Meta are powerful optimisation machines, but they optimise toward the target you give them. If the target is a weak conversion, they will spend your money efficiently to get more weak conversions. The numbers go up. Revenue does not.
The test every business should run this week
You do not need new software to do a first check. Do this:
- Pick last month. Write down real enquiries, real qualified leads and real sales from your own systems: CRM, inbox, booking system, till or e-commerce orders.
- Write down the conversions Google claims and the conversions Meta claims for the same month.
- Add the platform numbers together. If that total is higher than reality, you have double counting or fake conversions.
- Compare cost per real customer, platform by platform, to your margin on that customer.
- If you cannot match a reported conversion to a real person or order, do not use it to make a budget decision.
Most businesses are shocked by step 3 the first time they do it properly.
What clean ad data looks like
- One clear primary conversion per platform, tied to a real business outcome: a submitted enquiry, a completed sale, a confirmed booking
- Secondary actions tracked separately, not mixed into the main result: page views, button clicks, video views
- Duplicate, test and staff activity removed
- Platform totals reconciled regularly to your CRM or sales system
- Reporting in ranges and trends you can trust, not single numbers presented as exact truth
- Creative and campaigns judged on real return, not on platform applause
How Seria Analytics works at Wassp
Seria Analytics is Wassp's in-house technology. It is not sold separately, and clients do not need to log in to it. We use it on the accounts we manage.
It checks your Google Ads and Meta Ads data before we act on it. It finds wasted spend, strips out fake conversions, scores creative before it runs, and gives our team a daily briefing of problems to fix. It also builds in South African benchmarks, including payday and holiday patterns, so a normal seasonal dip is not treated as a crisis and a real problem is not hidden by a good weekend.
The result is simple: decisions based on real versus reported, not on reported alone.
Why this matters more in 2026
AI-driven bidding, broad targeting and automated campaigns give the platforms more control than ever. That can work well, but only if the data feeding the machine is honest. Bad conversion data plus powerful automation equals wasted spend at scale, faster than a human could waste it manually.
Businesses that win will not be the ones with the prettiest dashboards. They will be the ones who check the data first, then spend.
Frequently asked questions
What is Seria Analytics?
Seria Analytics is Wassp's in-house ad data intelligence tool. It checks Google Ads and Meta Ads data, finds wasted spend and shows our team what to fix before we act.
Can I buy Seria Analytics on its own?
No. It is our own working tool and is not sold. You get the benefit when Wassp manages your ads.
Do I need to log in to Seria Analytics?
No. We use it on your accounts and tell you what it finds, in clear reports and actions.
How do I know if my conversions are fake?
Compare platform conversions to real enquiries and sales for the same period. A persistent gap, conversions with no matching lead or order, and a cost per conversion that looks too good for your market are all warning signs.
Want to know what your ads really delivered?
Ask us to look at your Google and Meta accounts. We will show you real versus reported, and what we would fix first.
