Short answer
Local SEO is how a business shows up when nearby customers search on Google and Google Maps for what it does. To get found, claim and complete your Google Business Profile with accurate details, collect and reply to reviews, use the same name, address and phone number everywhere, and build clear pages on your website for each service and area you serve. For most local businesses, this is the highest value free marketing available, because the searcher usually needs someone now.
Why near me searches are money searches
When someone searches plumber near me, hair salon Bedfordview or coffee shop open now, they are not doing casual research. They have a need, a location and usually a wallet ready. Google answers with the map pack, the three local businesses shown with ratings, hours and a call button.
If you are not in that pack, a competitor is, and they get the call. Local SEO is the work that puts you there, and keeps you there.
Step 1: Own your Google Business Profile properly
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that powers your map presence. It is free, and many businesses have never claimed theirs, or claimed it years ago and never looked again.
Set it up like it matters, because it does:
- Claim and verify the listing, and make sure only people who should have access, have access
- Use your real business name. Keyword stuffing your name can get a listing suspended
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add the other services you offer
- Add your full address, service areas if you go to customers, phone number, website and accurate opening hours, including public holiday hours
- Add your services and products with descriptions and prices where it helps a customer choose
- Add real photos regularly: premises, team, vehicles, work in progress and finished work. Listings with fresh, real photos earn more trust than listings with a logo and nothing else
- Turn on messaging or WhatsApp where you can genuinely respond quickly, and leave it off where you cannot
Step 2: Be consistent everywhere, word for word
Google trusts a business it can verify in several places. Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google profile, Facebook page, directories and any industry listings.
Old addresses, a landline you cancelled in 2022 and three versions of your business name all create doubt, for Google and for customers. Do a clean-up once, properly, and keep a single master record of how your details should appear.
Step 3: Reviews are your local ranking fuel and your sales pitch
Reviews influence whether you appear prominently and, even more, whether the searcher picks you.
- Ask at the moment of satisfaction, in person, then follow up with a direct link by WhatsApp or email
- Make it easy: a QR code at the till, on invoices and on your vehicles
- Reply to every review, good and bad, briefly, politely and without arguing in public. Your reply is written for the next 100 readers, not the reviewer
- Never buy reviews or offer discounts for positive ones. Fake patterns are visible, and one public call-out damages more than reviews help
- Use real review themes in your marketing. If customers keep praising your response time in Randburg, say so, in those words
Step 4: Build local pages on your website, one service and area at a time
Your Google profile gets you considered. Your website convinces and converts.
For each main service and each main area you serve, you need clear content that answers that search properly: what the service includes, who it is for, pricing guidance, recent work in that area, reviews from that area where you have them, and a clear way to call, book or enquire.
Do not copy one page twenty times and swap the suburb name. Google and AI search tools are good at spotting thin, duplicated pages, and customers are even better at it. A smaller number of genuine local pages beats a pile of fakes.
Step 5: Cover the basics Google expects
- A fast, mobile-friendly website. Local searches are mostly on phones, often on the move
- Your address and phone number visible on your website, ideally in the footer of every page and on a contact page with a map
- Correct trading hours everywhere, especially before long weekends and public holidays
- Photos and posts on your profile during the year, not only at set-up
- Listings on the local and industry directories your customers actually use, kept consistent
How long does local SEO take, and what does it cost?
Claiming and fixing your profile can show early movement within weeks. Competitive areas and categories, such as attorneys, dentists, plumbers and restaurants in busy Johannesburg or Cape Town suburbs, take longer, because your competitors are working on the same pack.
The profile itself is free. The cost is time and consistency, or an agency fee if you want it run for you. Compared with paid ads in the same categories, where clicks commonly cost R10 to R50 or more in South Africa, a strong organic map presence is one of the best returns available to a local business.
Frequently asked questions
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that helps a business appear in Google search and Google Maps results for nearby customers, including its Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details and local website pages.
How do I get my business into the Google map pack?
Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, complete every section accurately, keep your details consistent everywhere, gather genuine reviews and reply to them, and build proper pages for your services and areas on a fast mobile website.
Do reviews really affect my ranking?
Reviews affect both visibility and choice. The number, rating, recency and your responses all signal a real, active business, and a well-reviewed business wins more calls from the same position than a poorly reviewed one.
Can I rank in a suburb where I do not have premises?
You can serve an area and be visible there, especially as a service-area business that travels to customers, but a physical location in the area is a strong advantage. Be accurate about where you are based. Misleading locations risk suspension.
